The Department of Special Education offers both B.Ed and D.Ed Special Education (Visual Impairment) Courses with an intake capacity of 30 students and two years of study duration. This building comprising of 2880 Sq. mts with 3 floors has been constructed with accessibility for barrier free features. The foundation stone for the building was laid by Smt. Anuradha Dalmia, Director (former), NIVH, Dehradun on 5th September 2009. Thiru. D. Napoleon, Hon'ble Minister of State (former), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt of India, formally dedicated the Department of Special Education on 9th March 2013.

Specific Objectives of the Courses are:

• To acquire knowledge about the changes in the prevailing and emerging Indian society in view of recent trends in the education of children with visual impairment and national development.
• To identify the special needs of children with visual impairment and develop confidence in them to realize their potential and abilities to contribute to the national development with self-respect, dignity and freedom.
• To develop skills and competencies to cater to the needs of children with visual impairment in different class settings.



B.Ed Special Education (Visual Impairment):




This Course was initially started in the year 2007 with an intake capacity of 20 students, with one year duration, formerly affiliated to University of Madras and then to Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University. This Course is also approved by Rehabilitation Council of India, New Delhi. This B.Ed Special Education Programme aims to prepare teachers to work in special, integrated and inclusive settings. So far 10 batches of students completed the course and at present 11th and 12th batches are at progress. The total numbers of beneficiaries include 253 students (93 Male, 160 Female) inclusive of 114 students with disabilities.




D.Ed Special Education (Visual Impairment):




This Course aims to prepare special teachers to handle children with visual disabilities at primary to elementary level in special, integrated and inclusive settings. This course was started in the Department of Special Education on 9th July 2014. So far 3 batches of students completed the course and at present 4th and 5th batches are at progress. The total numbers of beneficiaries include 80 (59 Male, 21 Female) inclusive of 57 students with disabilities.




Others:

• The Department also serves as Study Centre for B.Ed Special Education (Visual Impairment) Course of Tamil Nadu Open University through distance mode. The duration of the Course includes two and half years with five semesters. At present 2017-19 batch (40 Nos) and 2018-20 (100 Nos) attached to this Centre. The Centre facilities counselling and workshop sessions in adherence to the norms of the said University.
• The Department also offers Career Counselling for both B.Ed and D.Ed Special Education (Visual Impairment) Degree holders of this Centre.
